John C. Daniels

School of International Communication

Our Mission

John C. Daniels School of International Communication is committed to the belief that all children are capable of learning. Through our dual language program, all children are instructed in Spanish and English with the goal of becoming bilingual and bi-literate in both languages by the end of eighth grade. We focus on the development of the whole child: intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially. Through this focus we address individual differences and needs while challenging and motivating each child to reach their full potential.

This week room 123 had English reading:

  • We learned about the letters I, D and N. Please have your child practice writing these letters as well as writing his/her name! We also practiced identifying the first sound we hear in words. Try this at home! Give your child a word and have him/her give you the first sound they hear in the word.
  • We read the books: What Lives in the Sea and The Kissing Hand. We discussed animals that live in the sea. We also discussed what a nonfiction (informational) text is and how it is different from a fiction text. We also worked on identifying the setting and retelling a story.
  • In writing we shared our treasure bags and wrote about something or someone special to us. We had some great items shared and wonderful stories told about why they are so special! Our writing can be found hanging up in the room…come check it out!!

In Math we began talking about differences and we found differences within pictures and ourselves.

We also finished chapter one and had our very first math test! Next week we will move on to chapter two!

In Social Studies we continue to discuss Superflex and appropriate behavior in different social situations. We even had our very first Superflex mission!

We also attend our very first town meeting. We had the opportunity to see what other children in the school are studying during this first unit. We will get to share what we have been learning at the next town meeting!

Reminders:

  • I have established an email group for each homeroom so I can also send notes and important announcements via email. If I do not have your email please let me know so I can add you to the group.
  • Please send in an extra pair of clothes (does not have to be a uniform) for your child incase he/she has an accident. Thank You!
  • Completed Book It calendars are due Friday!

This week we read the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. This marking period we are concentrating on who the authors and illustrators of the stories we read are and what their jobs are within the story. When you read to your child make sure you point our who the author and illustrator are. Also ask your child to tell you what their jobs are. In our story we were even able to discuss some characters from the team of unthinkables (Superflex) that appeared in our story!

In phonics we learned about the letters D, I and N. Please remember to have your child practice writing the letters we study in school. You can also go on a letter hunt with your child. Have your child find the letters D, I and N. You can play this game wherever you are! In writing we used our letters to label the people in our stories. We also learned how to write the word me and placed that over our head in our story.

In math we continue to learn about the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. We also continue to learn about the concept of same and different.

In social studies we continue to learn about Superflex and the team of unthinkables! This week we concentrated on learning more about Rigid Brain and we learned some Superflex strategies to help defeat him! Ask your child to tell you about Rigid Brain and what strategies he/she has learned to help defeat him.

Reminders:

  • Please make sure your child writes his/her name on all homework assignments. Assignments without names will be thrown out.
  • On Wednesday, October 19, we will be taking a bus to Tower One to learn about Sukkot. A permission slip, along with more information, will be sent home on Tuesday.  Please make sure you sign and return the permission slip on Wednesday. Children may not attend the trip unless a permission slip has been signed.
