School of International Communication

Our Mission

John C. Daniels School of International Communication is committed to the belief that all children are capable of learning. Through our dual language program, all children are instructed in Spanish and English with the goal of becoming bilingual and bi-literate in both languages by the end of eighth grade. We focus on the development of the whole child: intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially. Through this focus we address individual differences and needs while challenging and motivating each child to reach their full potential.

November 18

This week room 123 learned all about the letters H, E and B. We also continue to play what word (I break up the words into 2 parts and the students need to put it together and tell me what word I’m saying) and what’s the first sound (I give the students a word and they tell me what sound the word begins with). These are both great phonics games that you can play at home with your child!

In shared reading we read the story It Didn’t Frighten Me. I ask your child to tell you what was sitting up in the child’s tree. Within this story we worked on our CAP (Concepts about Print) skills. We pointed to the first and last word on each page, we pointed to where we should start reading on each page and we pointed to each word as we read it! Have your child practice doing some of these skills when you read to him/her at night.

In comprehension we read the story When Sophie Gets Angry…Really, Really Angry by Molly Bang. We continue to discuss the author and illustrator and what their jobs are. We also found the problem within our story and how it was solved. We also discussed different ways that Sophie could have solved her problem. We also made personal connections to the text about times when we were angry and what we did. We discussed the different reactions we can have when we are angry and some things we could do when we are angry to calm ourselves down. Our vocabulary words this week were: angry, comforts and heads for home. Ask your child what these words/phrases mean.

In writing we choose one piece of work to publish. Then we added more details and color to make it perfect! Our finished products can be found hanging in our classroom. Come in and take a look!

In math we learned all about the number 9 and we began making comparisons between numbers. We also counted 9 objects and wrote the number 9!

We ended our first unit, The World in Our Backyard, by putting together our family books. We ended our science unit, Weather, by observing the wind speed using flags we made in class. We found that on Thursday there was zero to minimal wind and on Friday there was some wind! We had a great time getting out onto the playground and using our flags!

Reminders:

  • Conferences are ending this week! If you missed your appointment please call us to reschedule for another date. Due to limited time missed conferences will be made up after our Thanksgiving break.

Dear Parents and Guardians, clock

Our first report card conferences are being held this Wednesday at 3:00pm until 7:30pm. The teachers try their hardest to meet with all parents as a 1st grade team, but at times that cannot happen and we need to split up. We only have about 5 minutes per child since we have 50 children in our 1st grade class. If you would like to set up an appointment at another time to meet with us, you are more than welcome to do so. We thank you for your patience and help during our first conference night.

We also have sent home a form for the Health Hero Challenge. We hope to get 100% participation from our two classes. Please send the blue paper back signed and we will send a check off list for you to keep at home and fill out for the first 4 weeks of the challenge. We thank you for all your continued support.
